There is
nothing on this earth to be preferred before true friendship. For friendship
unites those who are virtuous and helps them to preserve and strengthen their
virtue. We all of us, whatever our task in life, have need of it; steadfast
alike in good times and in bad. Friendship is the source of the greatest pleasures,
and without friends even the most agreeable pursuits become tedious. Love makes
things which are difficult easy and almost unworthy of note.
St Thomas
Aquinas, De Regimine Principum, Ch.
X.
